Who Likes Video Games??

>> Wednesday, June 1, 2011

Well, I know one little boy who does, and his brother too! He loves super mario and sonic the hedgehog. Since his brothers cake was Luigi from just a couple months back, he decided on a sonic cake, and he was amazed =) And it was yummy too! I got the privilege of getting some cake this time since we were invited to the party =)

Peace, Love and Rock n' Roll

>> Friday, May 27, 2011

I had this sheet cake to make for this little girl for her 9th birthday and I was so excited about this one, just because of how much fun I knew it would be! This cake gave me the freedom to put anything I wanted where ever I wanted! It was awesome... And the best part was, her mother was absolutely THRILLED with the cake and said she'd give me a call for her other daughters birthday! Of course, my little ones were sad they couldn't have any of it, but a batch of cupcakes cured that almost instantly!

Are Mermaids Real?

>> Thursday, May 19, 2011

I'm not sure about that in real life, but I can tell you for my daughter's 4th birthday, this mermaid was very much alive in her open wavy blue ocean!

My daughter got her happiness from her awesome mermaid cake, and I got my happiness from my daughter saying, "You're the bestest cake maker ever mommy" =)

Easter 2011

>> Wednesday, May 4, 2011

Usually, every major holiday, the kids and I make cut out sugar cookies and then spend the day decorating them. The cookies we made this year for Easter, was particularly fun, since I let the kids use my icing bags and tips for the first time. They absolutely loved it and had a blast! Apparently, it was way better than just icing them with a butter knife and putting sprinkles on them, LOL!

Here are a few that I made this year:

Happy Birthday Baby Boy!

>> Thursday, April 21, 2011

So my youngest son turned 7 today!! My goodness has the time flown by! For this special birthday he decided he wanted an "army cake". Anything to do with the army, just like his uncle Eric... So, since it was 8 o'clock at night, and had a bare cake to still decorate, and short on time for the little ones to consume it before bed, I came up with a hat, LOL.

Could have been way better, I'm sure, but still not bad for 15 minutes and no time to spare!

Birds Nest Treats

I was looking over a blog that I frequently visit, and I stumbled upon a really cute and adorable recipe! I was eager to try it, so I did last night. Much to my amusement, they actually turned out and I did it right! Here is the recipe that I used:

3 c. mini marshmallows
3 TBSP unsalted butter
1/2 tsp vanilla
4 c. dry chow mein noodles
small candies, jelly beans, m & m's, etc.

Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper. Set aside.

Over low heat, melt the marshmallows and butter in a large saucepan.

Once melted, stir in the vanilla, then the chow mein noodles.

Coat your hands liberally with shortening, (butter doesn't work as well) and have some nearby for re-coating.

Take a small clump of the mixture and make a ball. Then using your thumbs, press down in the middle, to shape it into a "nest". After using up the entire mixture, let the nests completely cool to romm temperature. After they have set, add your eggs, m &m's, or other candy of your choice. And viola! Here is the result:

They are so much like rice krispie treats!

Happy St. Pat's

>> Thursday, March 17, 2011

This year for St. Patrick's day, I decided to make the kiddos some cupcakes. And boy, were they happy! They scarfed them down faster than it took me to whip up the batter! I managed to salvage a few to at least get this picture!!

Remember Super Mario Brothers?

>> Monday, March 7, 2011

So I had a cake order this past weekend for a birthday cake, for a little boy turning 8 years old. His favorite thing is Mario and Luigi! He liked Luigi more than Mario, so that's the cake he got! It didn't take nearly as long as I thought it would, although at a whopping 6 hours, it was finished! This is one of the more "fun"cakes I have done, and I really enjoyed making this one! It was a blast!

I stacked together an 8" chocolate square atop of a 10" chocolate square. Of course, mostly iced in butter cream, but I decided to use a little fondant with this one, just so I could have an excuse to play around with it again =) Surprisingly, to me, it turned out great! I was slightly disappointed in Luigi, as he was a little bigger than I planned him to be, as pictured below. But, I guess for my first time making such a figure like this, I did an awesome job, LOL!

The mushroom and the star were pretty simple to do, but the plant was a little tricky too, but fun =) I decided not to do the whole thing in fondant, just because a lot of people don't care for the taste of it, so I thought mostly all butter cream would be better suited for a kid's party, and I was right! Here's a couple pictures of the cake, itself:

And I decided to finally post a picture of me and a cake I created =)

This was truly so much fun. Thank goodness for Nik's birthday coming up in a couple weeks, so I can do it all over again!!

The Pretty Brownie

>> Monday, January 17, 2011

Last night I had an "itch" to bake something. Had no idea what, just wanted to bake something! With it being almost bedtime, I decided to hold off til morning. When I woke up this morning, I looked in the pantry to see what looked yummy. And there, on the third shelf, I saw it. A nice big red box of brownies =) So, off to work I went. I wanted to get a little creative, instead of making your typical "boring brownie". So, I let them cool completely, as tempting as it was to eat a freshly baked hot brownie. I decided to whip up some cocoa icing and pull out my bags and icing tips. From there, it's history, LOL... Here's how they turned out, and I'm glad I took the extra 5 minutes to do it, becuase they look so much better than a regular brownie!

All I have to say is YUM. These were delicious!

Hokie Pokie

>> Thursday, January 13, 2011

So today ws Trent's birthday, (my finace), at a ripe old age of 34! Wow! Where does the time go??? Anyway, his absolute favorite team is the Virginia Tech Hokies, so that's what he got! I made him a hokies cake last year, which by the way was a complete shame. I'm almost embarassed to post it. It was the first cake I attempted with limited time, and limited knowledge.

Now you can see how embarassed I am to even post it. First off, the entire cake doesn't even have icing on it. Secondly, it just flat out looks like crap. Hoever, this cake and one year's time is the perfect example of how far I have come along in the cake decorating business. Here is the picture from today's cake:

Awesome, huh? Here are a few more details...

As you can see in the above picture, my hand is quite shakey. I think mostly because I was in a rush, and just didn't plan ahead very well, but hey, at least I got the shape right, lol.

Here is a nice side view of the cake... I thought the hokie feet were cute, LOL.

I deccided to try something different with Trent's cake, which I think came out cute. I decorated the edges as if I squirted it with silly string! I like it!

And inside the cake you will see that I made a chocolate one, lol. 4 layers and a whole LOT of icing. YUM. Need a better view?

As stated above. YUM. =)
