Fondant: First Attempt

>> Monday, January 3, 2011

I've had a box of Wilton's Ready-To-Use fondant for quite some time now, and I've been avoiding trying it.I've never worked with fondant in my life. It looked so hard and complicated to do, especially all the detailed work! But, today I decided it's a new year, and time to up my abilities a notch. So, I started off with making a 10"x10" strawberry supreme cake. After letting it cool for hours, I opened the box. I think I was surprised with the texture, and feel of it? I cut about 1/4 of the block, and started rollin git out. It was a little difficult to roll, with all the flipping back and forth, but I was shocked at how easy it was to smooth away the rough spots or wrinkles after each time I flipped it over. I got out my brand new fondant tools, and started fooling around with it. I cut our some flowers with it, and I suppose they looked alright. I then cut another 1/4 off the block and got out some of my food coloring gel. I put my gloves on, and dabbed my finger in some pink gel, and started kneeding the fondant. I cut out some more of the same flowers as I did with the white fondant, and here's how they looked:

I then took another quarter of the fondant block and colored it blue, and the last quarter was colored green. I made more flowers in the blue color and then cut out some leaves using the green. By this time, I had a big smile on my face, because they were turning out so well ;) For me anyway, having never touched fondant in my life!

Now, since I never read anything and I only look at pictures (I'm worse than a man trying to build something with directions), I saw on the box of fondant, there was a picture of a tall round cake covered in fondant, with decorations and details in fondant too. So, of course, I thought there would be enough to make the stuff I wanted, plus cover my square cake. So not the case. I had to cover the cake in buttercream, which is ok anyway, in case my family ends up not liking fondant! So, I put on the crumb coat first:

After letting dry for about 15 minutes, I put the icing on it. And then the fun began! I had these flowers, I just made al by myself, that I was so proud of, LOL, now where was I going to put them? I wasn't really sure HOW i wanted to do it, so I just started putting them anywhere...

Here's a close up of the details:

So, there it is. My very first attempt at fondant. Hope you enjoyed it!

Aww, thanks Brandy! You're words are so encouraging! I have to get to the store soon so I can buy the other ingredients to make my own fondant. That's my next project!

Yeah!! I was going to use this one recipe that contained glycerin and unflavored gelatin, but it just did NOT seem appealing to me at all. Then I came upon this buttercream fondant recipe:
